Description
The Moorings is a spacious much-loved family-friendly home, carefully restored to retain its original character with large Victorian bay windows overlooking the sea, immediate access to rocky and sandy beaches at the front and a sheltered garden behind.
With two living rooms and sleeping space for 9 (maximum 11), there is plenty of room for all the family to spread about and enjoy the pleasures of being by the sea. Swim, surf, relax, play, sleep! Our guests have ranged from ages 1-100 over the years and include dogs!
The Moorings is a much loved spacious three storey Victorian house that looks out to sea over Trevone’s beautiful unspoilt coastline. The house has been in our family for four decades and been enjoyed by parents, children, babies, teen-agers, grand-parents and dogs alike.
We have recently spent a year renovating the property to a high standard from top to bottom, taking care to respect its period features – large wooden bay windows, tiled fire places, original wooden floor boards, cast iron bath, old mirrors and glass lamps – whilst adding many improvements to offer a feeling of luxury, simplicity and comfort (new insulation, replumbing, rewiring, ensuite bathrooms with showers, a kitchen extension with sky light, a wood-burning stove and an external terrace).
The ground floor has been opened up to create an extensive living/dining/kitchen area which stretches from the front of the house facing towards the sea, to the back, opening out through French doors onto a terrace and garden. The kitchen table can be extended to seat a maximum of 12 people.
An additional living room on the first floor means that the house offers plenty of space for family and friends to spread about and relax without being on top of one another. This first floor living room contains a sofa bed, should further sleeping space be required.
The house is bright and spacious throughout with large windows and high ceilings. It is decorated with an eclectic mix of textiles, art and craft works which have been collected and in some cases made by members of the family over the years. Books written by family members are also available for reading along with children’s books and books about Cornwall, birds, shells and wildlife for the curious-minded! There is also a large cupboard of old fashioned family games for all ages and a shed containing beach toys, fishing rods and body surfing equipment.
Location
Built in 1899, the house forms part of a Victorian terrace that looks out to sea over Newtrain bay (known as the ‘rocky beach’) which offers a spectacular vista of rockpools, ideal for fishing, crabbing, bird watching, climbing and observing wildlife. To the right of the property is Trevone’s sandy beach, ideal for swimming, surfing, sunbathing, beach games and relaxation. Those wanting to swim in calm waters can stroll along the coastal path to Tinker Bunny’s Pool, a natural rockpool which is exposed when the tide goes out and is popular with cold water swimmers all year round (including ourselves).
The cliffs on one side stretch towards Harlyn Bay (a large sandy beach popular with surfers) just a twenty minute walk along the coastal path. On the other side the coastal path leads to the historic harbour and fishing town of Padstow, now also a centre for good food and home to Rick Stein’s famous fish restaurant and other outlets. This longer walk which is 5-6 miles long offers breath taking views of the rugged coastline and is enjoyable in all weathers.
A large choice of pubs, restaurants, cafes and fish and chip shops greet you on arrival in Padstow. For those whose legs are weary there is a shorter route back to Trevone across the fields (50 minutes). Those into foraging will notice the wonderful array of wild mushrooms in the autumn.
Next to Trevone beach is a café/restaurant/bar and a beach shop with useful items and surfing equipment for hire. There is also an old fashioned sauna overlooking the beach which can be booked for up to 9 people for those who enjoy extremes of heat and cold.
Trevone also houses a village shop which sells food and local crafts. The Padstow Farm shop ( situated between Trevone and Padstow) selling an extensive range of local produce, including cheeses, meat, vegetables, alcohol and assorted local items.
Where you will sleep
Bedroom 1 A large vaulted double bedroom room at the top of the house (3rd floor) offering a king sized bed, sea view and generous sized ensuite tiled bathroom with shower, wash basin and loo.
Bedroom 2 A quiet and sunny double bedroom on the ground floor with period windows and a door opening onto the garden at the back of the house. It has an ensuite bathroom equipped with a shower and washbasin.
A loo and additional ornamental washbasin are accessible from the corridor leading to the room.
Bedroom 3 Ideal for children, this room on the first floor can sleep four people. It has a triple bunk and single bed and a large window looking out over the garden.
Bedroom 4 Known to us as ‘the cabin’, this small single room is everyone’s favourite when staying in the house without partners. It contains a single bed under the window which looks straight out to sea.
Optional Bedroom 5/upstairs living room The upstairs living room contains a sofa bed which means that it can be used as a double bedroom if required but it functions best as an extra sitting room where everyone can enjoy the spectacular sea view through the bay window.
